To be clear, Ciociaria is a historic territory, not a defined administrative region: Ciociaria is a traditional cultural and geographic area in central Italy, located primarily southeast of Rome. Its boundaries have never been strictly defined and have evolved over time, reflecting local history, geography, and cultural identity.

The origin of the name Ciociaria is traditionally associated with the ciocie, the distinctive leather sandals once worn by shepherds, farmers, and other inhabitants of the area. These simple handmade shoes became an enduring symbol of the region and its rural heritage.

In modern times, the name Ciociaria became increasingly associated with the Province of Frosinone, particularly after the province was established in 1927. Although Ciociaria extends beyond today's provincial boundaries, Frosinone is widely regarded as its cultural and geographic heart.

Identitfied more than an administrative designation, Ciociaria represents a shared cultural landscape shaped by ancient hill towns, medieval villages, agricultural traditions, local cuisine, historic architecture, and centuries of connections between Rome, southern Lazio, and the Apennines.
